The apple is a well-known symbol of knowledge and wisdom. I decided to leverage that symbolism for this project. Given the theme of the booklet, I felt that it was fitting. Additonally, I chose this symbol as it can easily be simplified and deconstructed into an icon while maintaining its legibility as an apple.
The colors were predefined mostly by the commission that I worked for here but, they worked perfectly. In African American tradition, red, green, and black are deeply symbolic colors. Red symbolizes the blood shed for the liberation of African American people. Green represents the land that they hail from, Africa, rich and abundant in nature. Black, which manifests here as a dark gray is symbolic of the color of the people who fought for their freedom and are united by African ancestry.
Accesibilty was a huge consideration when deciding on the type for this project, especially the body text you see on the spreads. I wanted to make sure it was simple, yet slightly elegant, which is why I chose a serif font there. There is also a bold, display text I chose for the cover. This was paired with a thinner font for the subheading in order to create a visual hierarchy, indicative of a heading and subheading relationship
